Abstract

This study investigates the complexities of translation, with a specific focus on word-level non-equivalence in Madeline Miller’s novel Circe and its Indonesian translation. Using Mona Baker’s framework as a foundation, this study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with disproportionate stratified random sampling to identify types of non-equivalence and analyze the translation strategies employed. The findings reveal that the most frequent non-equivalence issue was culture-specific concepts (36.47%), driven by the novel's rich mythological context. To bridge these gaps, the translator applied various techniques based on Mona Baker’s theory, with paraphrasing using a related word emerging as the dominant strategy (28.63%). Conversely, translation by illustration was absent due to the lack of visual materials in the novel. Overall, this study sheds light on the various strategies employed to address non-equivalence issues in mythological literature, offering key insights into the complex realm of translation.
